Losing a car key is stressful. Losing your only car key is worse, because there is nothing left to copy and the car may be stuck where it is. The good news is that we can still help: we can make a new key even when you have no keys left.
This guide covers what to do if you have lost your car key, what happens when you have lost all your keys, and why getting a spare while you still have a working key is the simpler route.
Lost one key, but still have another?
If you still have one working key, you are in a good position. We can make a spare from the key you have. Bring the car and the working key to us, along with your proof of ownership, and we take it from there.
A typical remote or smart key copy takes 1 to 2 hours. Once you have the new key, keep it somewhere safe at home, not in the car.
Lost all your car keys?
Yes, we can still help. When there is no key left to copy, we can make a new key for your car. Because we are making a key without an existing one, proof of ownership is especially important. We only make keys for the car’s owner.
What to have ready:
- Proof of ownership: your OneMotoring vehicle log card or your vehicle ownership record in Singpass. See proof of ownership for details.
- Your car’s details: make, model and year.
- Where the car is: if the car can’t be brought to us, tell us where it is. Onsite service is available for an extra fee, quoted on WhatsApp.
WhatsApp us first so we can confirm we can help with your car before anything is arranged. We make keys for most car models, but not every car is the same.
First, check the usual places
Before you assume the key is gone, it is worth a quick look:
- Bags, jacket pockets and the gym bag
- Your office desk or the last shop you visited
- Your condo or building management office, in case someone handed it in
- Family members who might have borrowed it
If it still hasn’t turned up, it’s time to get a new key sorted.
Why getting a spare now is simpler
If you only have one key today, a spare is worth getting before anything goes wrong. Copying a working key is more straightforward than starting with no key at all, and you avoid the stress of a car you can’t use.
Many cars come with only one key
Used cars often change hands with a single key. If you bought your car second-hand, check how many keys you actually have.
Keys wear out
Buttons wear down, casings crack and blades loosen. A key that is tired today might stop working tomorrow. If yours is getting old, see our guide to a car key fob that isn’t working.
More than one driver
If someone else in the household drives the car, a second key saves a lot of handing back and forth, and you are never left without one.
Where to keep a spare key
- At home, in a set place that everyone in the household knows.
- Not in the car. A spare in the glovebox doesn’t help if the car is locked, and it isn’t safe.
- Away from doors and windows if it is a smart key. See our keyless car safety tips.
How much does a new or spare key cost?
Key making is quote on request, because the price depends on your car’s make, model and year, the key type and whether you still have a working key. Our post on what affects the cost of a car key copy explains the main factors.
