Flip Key Copy in Singapore: Getting a Spare Flip Key

Flip Key Copy In Singapore – Car Key Guru

A flip key is the key with the metal blade that folds into the body and springs out when you press a button. It is neat, it fits in a pocket, and it is common across many car models in Singapore. It is also one of the keys people most often come to us about when they want a spare.

This guide covers what a flip key is, the usual reasons people want a spare, what to send us for a quote and what to bring on the day.

What is a flip key?

A flip key is a remote key where the metal blade folds into the key and flips out at the press of a button. Like other remote keys, it has lock and unlock buttons, and you still put the blade into the ignition to start the car.

Many car keys, flip keys included, also have a chip in the head that the car needs to start. So a spare needs to work with your car, not just fit the lock. That is why we always check your car and key before quoting.

If your car is keyless or push-start, you probably have a smart key rather than a flip key. Our guide to smart, remote and transponder keys explains how to tell them apart.

How to tell if you have a flip key

  • The blade folds away. When closed, you can’t see the metal blade.
  • There’s a release button. Pressing it makes the blade flip out.
  • It has lock and unlock buttons. Some also have a boot button.
  • You turn it to start the car. Unlike a smart key, it goes into the ignition.

Common reasons people want a spare flip key

You only have one key

Many cars change hands with a single key, or the second key went missing years ago. If your only key is lost, everything gets harder. Getting a spare while your key still works is simpler than waiting until something goes wrong.

Your key is showing its age

Flip keys get used every day. Over time the hinge can loosen, the buttons can wear, and the casing picks up cracks from being dropped. If your key is getting tired, a spare means you are not relying on it alone.

A second driver in the household

If a partner, parent or grown-up child shares the car, swapping one key back and forth gets old fast. A second key lets everyone come and go on their own schedule.

Peace of mind

Some people simply like having a spare in a safe place at home. If you ever lock your key in the car, misplace it or leave it in the office, the spare saves the day.

Can every flip key be copied?

We make spare keys for most car models, but not every key can be copied. That is why we ask for photos and car details before you book. We’ll confirm whether we can help before you make the trip.

How much does a flip key copy cost?

Flip key copying is quote on request, because the price depends on your car’s make, model and year and on your key. We’d rather give you an accurate quote for your car than a general figure that may not apply. Our post on what affects the cost of a car key copy explains the main factors.

What to send for a quote

WhatsApp us these and we can reply with a proper answer:

  1. Key photos: clear photos of the front and back of your key, with any buttons visible. A photo with the blade flipped out helps too.
  2. Car details: your car’s make, model and year.
  3. How many keys: how many spares you need, and whether you’d like us to come to you.

On the day

  • Book a time. We’re appointment only, 11.30am to 6.30pm.
  • Bring your car to us at Burlington Square, 175 Bencoolen Street, a short walk from Rochor MRT. If you’d rather we come to you, onsite service is available for an extra fee, quoted on WhatsApp.
  • Bring your key, the one you want copied.
  • Bring proof of ownership, such as your OneMotoring vehicle log card or your vehicle ownership record in Singpass. We only make keys for the car’s owner. See proof of ownership.

Company or leased car? WhatsApp us first and we’ll tell you what we need.

Tips for looking after your flip key

  • Don’t flick the blade against hard surfaces. Let it open on its own.
  • Keep it off heavy key rings. Extra weight hanging from the key puts strain on it, especially in the ignition.
  • Keep it dry. Remote keys contain electronics.
  • Store the spare somewhere safe, and not in the car.
