When you come to us for a spare car key, we’ll ask you to show proof of ownership before we start. Some people are surprised by this, especially if they’ve only ever had house keys cut. But a car key isn’t like a house key. It opens and starts your car, so we’re careful about who we make one for.
This guide explains why we ask, what you can use as proof, what to do if the car isn’t in your name, and how to get everything ready before your appointment.
Why we ask for proof of ownership
A car key opens and starts your car, so we only make keys for the car’s owner. Checking ownership helps keep cars and their owners safe.
Think about it from the other side. If anyone could walk in and get a spare key for any car, it would be far too easy for someone to end up with a key to a car that isn’t theirs. Asking for proof helps stop spare keys being made for a car without the owner knowing.
For genuine owners, it’s quick. Showing a log card or a Singpass record takes a moment at your appointment.
What counts as proof
Bring one of these to your appointment, showing the car’s ownership:
- Your OneMotoring vehicle log card.
- Your vehicle ownership record in Singpass.
Either one is fine. You only need one.
Tips for getting it ready
- Check before you leave home. Make sure you can log in to Singpass and find your vehicle record, or that you have your log card handy.
- Charge your phone. If you’re showing a Singpass record, a flat phone won’t help.
- Check that the details match the car you’re bringing in.
Proof is needed for every key
We ask for proof for every car key we make, whichever service you’re booking:
- Remote, flip and transponder key duplication
- Smart key duplication
- Phone as car key. We only install phone as car key for the car’s owner, so please bring the same proof.
Company, leased or rental cars
Not every car on the road is registered to the person driving it. Company cars, leased cars and rental cars are common in Singapore. For company, leased or rental cars, WhatsApp us first and we’ll tell you what we need.
Please message us before you book rather than turning up and hoping for the best. That way you’ll know what to bring and won’t waste a trip.
What if the car isn’t registered in my name?
Maybe it’s a family member’s car, or it’s registered to someone else in your household. If the car isn’t registered in your name, WhatsApp us before you book and tell us about your situation, and we’ll tell you what we need.
What if I can’t show proof?
We want to be upfront about this: if we can’t confirm ownership, we won’t be able to make the key. If you’re unsure whether what you have is enough, WhatsApp us before you come and we’ll let you know.
Why this protects you too
It’s easy to see the ownership check as a hoop to jump through. But it works in your favour. Your car is probably one of the most valuable things you own, and the key is what stands between it and anyone else. Knowing that a spare can’t simply be made for your car without you knowing should give you some peace of mind.
It also means there’s no awkwardness at your appointment. We ask everyone the same thing, every time, so it’s nothing personal. Have your proof ready, show it when we meet, and we can get started.
If you’re helping someone else, such as an elderly parent who owns the car, the same rule applies. WhatsApp us first with the details and we’ll tell you what we need, so the visit goes smoothly for everyone.
How a visit works
Here’s the whole process from start to finish:
- Send photos. WhatsApp clear photos of the front and back of your key, plus your car’s make, model and year, to +65 8754 2299.
- Get a quote. We’ll confirm whether we can help and send you a quote.
- Book a time. We’re appointment only, between 11.30am and 6.30pm. Bring your car to us at 175 Bencoolen Street #01-22, Burlington Square, near Rochor MRT, or pay extra for onsite service.
- Show your proof. Show your log card or Singpass record when we meet, before we start.

- Your car (unless you’ve arranged onsite service).
